ABC NewsVIDEO Elijah Silvera 3 died in New York City on Nov. 3 and officials are investigating his death
A pre-K school in NY is under investigation following the death of a boy whose parents claim he was given a grilled cheese sandwich despite school officials having been warned of his allergy to dairy. "It is an unimaginable time for everyone who loved Elijah, in particular for his 5-year-old brother Sebastian, who struggles to understand that his brother is truly gone", the family wrote online, with photos showing the two boys playing side by side.
"Elijah was strong, he was a fighter and I'm going to keep fighting for that boy", Silvera said Friday.
The commination Pre-K and daycare operation was shuttered Wednesday by the city as an investigation into the sudden and tragic death continued. Family members said educators at the school were aware of Silvera's dairy allergy and had it documented, but somehow someone let him have the sandwich. He went into anaphylactic shock at the preschool, and he was taken to the pediatric ER at the nearby Harlem Hospital.
The site also houses a universal prekindergarten program, part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's effort to provide free prekindergarten to all New York City 4-year-olds, but Elijah was not a UPK student. She then took him to the hospital.
There's now a small memorial outside the school, as Elijah's death reminds all of us that when dealing with severe food allergies, schools, camps, parents, everyone, must play a role in keeping children with allergies safe.
The Seventh Avenue Center for Family Services did not immediately return a request for comment.
Christopher R. Miller, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, said in a statement, "There is nothing more important than the safety of our children and we are deeply saddened by this tragedy. We will get to the bottom of what happened here", the department said.
Dietary restrictions are incredibly serious when it comes to allergies - even more so when a child is involved.
