Bill Gates makes $100 million personal investment to fight Alzheimer's

Bill Gates Donates $50 Million To Alzheimer's Research

The billionaire is investing $50 million of his personal money in the London-based Dementia Discovery Fund, which is a private-public collaboration that invests in innovative dementia research.

"Of all the disorders that plague us late in life, one stands out as a particularly big threat to society: Alzheimer's disease", said Gates in his blog titled "Why I'm Digging Deep Into Alzheimer's".

The Microsoft co-founder said the donation to the Dementia Discovery Fund is personal and not through his charitable foundation. In a statement, Gates says men in his family have suffered from Alzheimer's.

"It's a huge problem, a growing problem, and the scale of the tragedy - even for the people who stay alive - is very high", he said.

Alzheimer's is a progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. Current medications can only ease some of the symptoms, at best. While he acknowledged to Reuters that it will take "probably 10 years before new theories are tried enough times to give them a high chance of success", Gates told CNN that he believes there is a solution.

We lacked the energy and sharpness to score a goal, but at the end of the day Sweden played in much the same way as the first leg. The big news from the first leg is that Marco Verratti will miss the second contest after picking up a yellow card in Sweden.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has set his sights on solving a new problem: Alzheimer's disease.

"I know how terrible it is to watch people you love struggle as the disease robs them of their mental capacity".

Gates says that he has identified five specific areas of need in scientific research for Alzheimer's: understanding how the disease unfolds, detecting and diagnosing it early, looking into multiple approaches to stop it, making it easier for people to enter clinical trials, and using data more efficiently. "It feels a lot like you're experiencing a gradual death of the person that you knew", he wrote.

He added that the Gates Foundation might consider how to expand access in poorer countries when treatments are developed.
