You Might Have Downloaded A Fake Adblock Plus Extension On Chrome

Fraudulent ad-blocking extension tricks 37000 Google Chrome users

Chrome OS 61 Is Updated With a New-Look Login Screen and Visual Appearance

An extension that tried to mimic the popular Adblock Plus extension was not only allowed into the Chrome Web Store but it was also only taken down after 37,000 users had already downloaded it.

SwiftOnSecurity - an anonymous cybersecurity personality - was the first to spot the fake Chrome extension.

At the time, SwiftOnSecurity reported, nearly 37,000 people had already downloaded this application. But because the extension spoofs the legitimate Ad Blocker name, it has managed to dupe thousands of people to download it.

Google later confirmed the fraudulent app had been removed from the Chrome Web Store.

If you've had Adblock Plus installed for a while, there's no need to be concerned as the fake version was a recent addition to the Chrome Web Store. Google discontinued the fake extension after they became aware of it.

If you suspect an extension may not be legit, it's worth checking the developer behind it and seeing if they are a genuine software maker or scammers in disguise.

This can not be dismissed as a stand-alone case, when it comes to fake apps in the Chrome web store.

SwiftOnSecurity claims the fake extension was created by a "fraudulent developer who clones popular name and spams keywords".

According to reviews for the fake extension, at least one user found themselves being targeted by invasive ads that opened multiple tabs after he installed the software.

However, those users who were tricked into downloading the fraudulent version of the web browser should immediately uninstall it. Back then, the search giant said that after bringing on the policy for the Windows users, there has been a drop of around 75% in the support requests for uninstalling unwanted extensions, notes The Verge.
