Disney has announced it is cancelling work on upcoming animation huge.

Variety reports that Walt Disney Animation Studios has ceased development on huge, a big screen adaptation of the classic fairytale "Jack and the Beanstalk" set to hit theaters on November 25, 2020.

The film was first announced at the D23 Expo in 2015 and was set to be directed by Tangled's Nathan Greno, with music by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez of Frozen fame. In the last five years alone, the Best Animated Feature Film Oscar either went to a Pixar or Disney Animation film: including fearless (2010) and Inside Out (2015) from Pixar, and Frozen, Big Hero 6 and Zootopia from Disney.

Ed Catmull, acting president of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, issued a statement addressing the decision to drop the project, explaining that the movie "just isn't working".

The trademark filing flew under the radar until Japanese news sites like Rocket News 24caught wind of it in recent days. Still, it would appear Nintendo has made good on its promise to get more units into consumers' hands.

Gigantic, Disney Animation's original feature project that was to have been released in 2020, is being shelved. With 'Gigantic, ' we've come to that point, and although it's a hard decision, we are ending active development for now.

Instead of "Gigantic", the studio is focusing on another project which is now being tabled for Thanksgiving 2020. The next projects for the studio include Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 (November 21, 2018) and Frozen 2 (November 27, 2019). Disney Animation and Pixar have both cancelled projects in the past, such as Pixar's Newt (due to story similarities with Rio) and Disney's King of the Elves.

The new project that Catmull mentions hasn't been given any further details, but insiders (via THR) note that it is an original concept.

If you've ever heard the long and gruelling process The Emperor's New Groove went through, this kind of cancellation should come as no surprise.
