Uber begins appeal against licence rejection

Uber lodges appeal over London ban

It filed documents at the Westminster Magistrate's Court.

The business this morning filed its intent to appeal the decision with Westminster Magistrates' Court, which will temporarily extend its operations in the United Kingdom capital, an Uber spokeswoman told The Register.

A hearing on the appeal will likely take place on Dec.11, officials said.

Transport for London [TfL] shocked the Silicon Valley firm last month by deeming it unfit to run a taxi service and refusing to renew its licence, citing its approach to reporting serious criminal offences and background checks on drivers.

London mayor Sadiq Khan said on Thursday that the appeal against regulator Transport for London "will take its course" during a City Hall question time session.

Earlier this month, Uber's new chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi reportedly met with TfL commissioner Mike Brown for peace negotiations.

After talks with TFL, Uber released a statement saying that it was a "constructive meeting" and that there would be further discussions in the coming weeks.

A TfL spokesperson said: "We note that Uber has submitted an appeal".

It launched a "Save Your Uber" petition, prominently visible to anyone using the Uber app in the British capital, which has now racked up more than 850,000 supporters.

Its expansion has been blighted by regulatory and legal complications worldwide, including wrangles over the employment rights of its drivers in the UK.

Labour MP Peter Kyle said: "Your initial reaction was that TfL is putting 40,000 people out of business. So the word on everyone's lips was 'hypocrite, ' wasn't it?"
