Snapchat to Launch Augmented Reality Art Platform Tomorrow

From today, Snapchat users will be able to explore his work in augmented reality at select locations around the world.

Each location will feature a virtual representation of one of Koon's brightly colored sculptures, including Balloon Dog, Swan, Rabbit, Popeye, and Play-doh.

Rendering the AR art must have been processor intense - I have the newest iPhone 8 Plus and the entire app was still running slowly.

Here are some of the artworks that will be revealed at different locations around the world.

Snapchat has a form on its website inviting other artists to bring their work to the messaging platform, but it's unclear whether it's now working with any other artists yet.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel announced the new feature and collaboration with Koons at the 2017 Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit. Basically, Snapchat has created a treasure hunt where the gold you're searching for is a shiny image of a Koons, standing about three stories tall, that you can snap a selfie with.

Once the countdown timer was removed, it revealed an image of Koons' iconic poodle balloon animal. The artist has been working on sculptures since the 1970s.

Koons' artwork can be pinned on Snapchat in the following locations: Champ de Mars in Paris, France, Central Park in New York, New York, Hyde Park in London, England, Roundhouse Park in Toronto, Canada, Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia, Millennium Park in Chicago, Illinois, Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, National Mall in Washington, DC, and Venice Broadwalk in Venice, California.

Snap is also opening the feature to other artists, who can can sign up to have their works displayed as 3D objects via the app.

According to the new feature, whenever a user will be near a registered Snapchat art piece, a special lens will appear.

The latest AR news comes from Snapchat - owned by Snap Inc (NYSE:SNAP) - looking to become relevant among art students everywhere.
