Women across the world are holding a day-long Twitter boycott to call attention to the treatment of women on social media, sparked by the uproar over actress Rose McGowan's account being temporarily suspended following her allegations against Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

Canadian-born actor Anna Paquin welcomed any men who wish to show their support under the trending hash tag #WomenBoycottTwitter.

Twitter said McGowan's tweets violated policy because she tweeted a private phone number.

"Any allegations of non-consensual contact are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein", Weinstein representative Sallie Hofmeister said Wednesday.

Though the tweets that resulted in her suspension weren't initially identified, Twitter clarified the issue to the Los Angeles Times.

"We have been in touch with Ms. McGowan's team".

The idea is the brainchild of software engineer Kelly Ellis in defense of actress Rose McGowan and "all the victims of hate and harassment Twitter fails to support". The tweet has since been deleted and McGowan's account unlocked. She made a series of Twitter posts Thursday directed at Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos, saying, "I told the head of your studio that HW raped me".

Her Twitter account was suspended for 12 hours yesterday for supposedly violating its community standards, which many interpreted as being linked to her fierce criticism of Ben Affleck and others.

"Twitter is proud to empower and support the voices on our platform, especially those that speak truth to power", the statement continues. "I said I was proof", she claimed.

It isn't just women who are joining the boycott.

Earlier, The New York Times reported that Weinstein paid a financial settlement of $100,000 to McGowan in 1997 over an incident in a hotel room at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. "I hope to see some meaningful changes come out of it, including better tools for dealing with dogpile-style harassment".
