Imran Khan proclaimed offender but not being arrested: Daniyal Aziz
In a major setback for Imran Khan, the Election Commission of Pakistan on Thursday issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief.
According to PTI Spokesperson Naeemul Haq, the party is set to challenge the warrants in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
The electoral body is hearing a case on alleged illegal foreign funding against Khan that had been filed against him by a party dissident Akbar S. Babar in November 2014. This warrant has been issued for failing to appear in the court repeatedly and not giving a written justification or apology to the court for not appearing despite various letters. The court has ordered for Imran Khan to be arrested and brought in front of the court at the next hearing of the case, which is on 26th October.
It was discovered that on September 14, the ECP has issued a bailable arrest warrant against Imran Khan after his failure to present himself for the proceedings. He further argued that the high court is going to hear a petition on the ECP's powers in connection with contempt of court hearings, DAWN reported.
Meanwhile, Awami Muslim League (AML) head Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad said that in contempt of court case, the issuance of nonbailable arrest warrant against Imran Khan is infringement and transgression of the law. "We will challenge the decision in court and will also look into the matter whether this is contempt of the IHC's decision or not", Babar Awan, PTI's member and lawyer said. It had then issued a formal show-cause notice to the PTI chairman, asking him to submit a reply by August 23.
