Mobile Caps Roaming Data In Mexico And Canada Starting November 12

14 October 2017, 12:20 | Bernard Bryant

T-Mobile is about to add a new limit to its unlimited plans

T-Mobile

Once that date arrives, T-Mobile will cap the amount of high-speed mobile data its customers can use while in either of those countries. After 5GB of high-speed data is used in Mexico and Canada (or your high-speed data allotment is reached, whichever comes first), customers will stay connected with unlimited data at Simple Global speeds (up to 128kbps for most plans or 256kbps with T-Mobile ONE Plus).

After you hit the 5GB cap (or less for some legacy plans), you will continue to get unlimited data; it'll just be very, very slow data.

LTE roaming in Mexico and Canada is being downgraded to 5GB/month, and the change takes effect on November 12.

After years of floundering, T-Mobile has become a real threat to Verizon and AT&T by offering options that the latter carriers didn't.

T-Mobile offered Mobile Without Borders Un-carrier plan which introduced free calling texting and LTE plans for travelers in Mexico, Canada, and US. The company T-Mobile unveiled that from November 12, it will bind the unlimited LTE data to 5 GB monthly at the time of traveling to United States neighbors.

Customers will now have a maximum LTE data limit of 5 GB in Mexico and Canada, after which they will be reduced to Simple Global speeds, meaning up to 128 kbps for most plans or 256 kbps with T-Mobile ONE Plus. However, this is a monthly fee, better than Verizon's plan that offers $10 per day. All the same, this does limit T-Mobile's appeal to jetsetters.

If you are on a US high-speed plan with 4GB data or 6GB data per month, you will get only 2GB data when you are in these countries.

The mobile carrier said that it wants to improve and make a decision to "prevent usage beyond the intent of the product". For those in that one percent, this is no doubt a disappointing turn of events. Customers on that unlimited plan and many of T-Mobile's other plans had access to data in other countries baked in if they needed it. You can also check your LTE data usage with a shortcode #WEB# from your mobile.
