Kobe Steel's lies reverberate across Japan's economy

Kobe Steel Says It Falsified Data on Some Aluminum, Copper Parts

Aluminum is widely used in cars, planes and high-speed trains in Japan which use the light-weight metal to increase fuel efficiency.

In a new corporate scandal rocking Japan, Tokyo-based Kobe Steel admitted that it's been faking data on some of its metal - specifically copper and aluminum.

Toyota said it had found Kobe Steel materials, for which the supplier falsified data, in bonnets, doors and peripheral areas.

The falsification was meant to make the metals look as though they met client quality standards.

- Suzuki Motor Corp.: "We are checking whether we used aluminum from Kobe Steel, and if so, if it is subject to data falsification".

Kobe Steel said data had been falsified to make the metals look as if they met quality standards.

"Nothing in our review to date leads us to conclude that this issue presents a safety concern", it said.

Toyota, Nissan and Honda, Japan's three largest automakers, all have confirmed using Kobe Steel's products for the hoods and doors of at least some of their Japanese-made vehicles.

Toyota called the revelations a "grave issue", and said it was making checks on where the components were used and what effect they have on products using them.

Some of the biggest auto manufacturers including Toyota and Honda are affected by an industrial scandal in Japan over falsified data relating to the strength and durability of aluminium used in the production of their cars.

The comments were confirmed by a company spokesman. The impacted products include about 19,300 tons of flat-rolled and extruded aluminum parts, about 2,200 tons of copper strips and tubes, and about 19,400 units of aluminum castings and forgings.

Railway companies including East Japan Railway Co. and Central Japan Railway Co. said that the problematic products had also been used in some of the Shinkansen bullet trains.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries said Kobe Steel products were used on its Mitsubishi Regional Jet and rockets, including the H-2A rocket launched on Tuesday morning to put a navigation satellite into orbit.

"We perceive that there was no problem as the rocket launch was a success", he said. Kobe Steel's aluminum and copper operations account for about 20 percent of total sales, according to data for the quarter ended June 30.

Analysts say the announcement further tarnishes the reputation of Japan's globe-trotting manufacturers, long celebrated for their high-quality products.

"We want Kobe Steel to make the utmost effort to restore trust from society", he said.

In other product-related cases, Takata pleaded guilty in the U.S.in February to one count of wire fraud for misleading automakers about the safety of its air bags.

Nissan last week recalled more than 1-million cars in Japan.
