Separated Conjoined Odisha Twin Condition 'Critical' After Over 17 Hours of Surgery
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has congratulated the team of specialists from the institute's neurosurgery, neuroanaesthesia and plastic surgery departments for the successful separation of Jaga and Balia.
Doctors say there are many roadblocks ahead for the twins in their path to recovery but they remain optimistic.
The 16-hour surgery on two-year-old brothers Jaga and Kalia was the first of its kind in India. There were many challenges in this surgery which we have never seen before.
"Both the kids have other health issues as well".
Dr Deepak Kumar Gupta, neurosurgeon at the AIIMS, who led the surgery along with Dr Mahapatra, said Jaga is on intermittent hemodialysis and his kidney functioning is improving.
'Though initially Jaga was healthier, now his condition has deteriorated.
AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria, who was also present at the press meet, said that the medical team was putting extra post-operative efforts for the improvement of the children as the chances of them catching infection was high.
The craniopagus twins from Kandhamal are now kept in the ICU at AIIMS, New Delhi and under direct observation of the experts.
The first surgery was performed on 28 August when the doctors created a bypass to separate the shared veins that return blood to the heart from the brain. Each of the twins also needed 20 units of blood. As per the information provided by the AIIMS, it will take more time to be stable completely. "80 per cent of them die during the treatment", he said. The conjoined twins were admitted to the AIIMS on July 13.
