Red Cross: Fight fire with preparation

Every second counts: Fire prevention week

For over 90 years, Fire Prevention Week has brought awareness nationwide to fire safety and preparedness.

As part of its annual effort to promote Fire Prevention Week, taking place October 8-14, 2017, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is partnering with Siemens for the second year in a row to help prevent and protect against fires in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

Fire prevention week is in full swing, and this year's theme is every second counts, know 2 ways out. It's a common misconception that fires are something that happens to other people.

Never overload outlets and never use extension cords in place of permanent wiring. Instead, use surge protected power strips.

"We're letting them look at the firemen in their gear, [and teaching them] not to be afraid of somebody with an airpack on", Fire Chief Pete Bierwiler said.

From the time a smoke alarm sounds, fire officials say you may only have 2 minutes or less to get out of a burning home safely. Homeowners or renters can call their local Red Cross chapter to schedule an appointment, and our gracious volunteers will come to their home to install up to three, free smoke alarms.

"That's why we are trying to educate the public, the fire is not just our fight, the fire is everyone's fight".

In addition to the new cities, these cities have also received smoke alarms this year: Odessa, Laredo, Wichita Falls, Travis County, Lufkin, Potter County, Galveston, Mission, Rivers End, Bonham, Farmers Branch, Amarillo, Haltom City, Little York, Burnet, New Braunfels and Conroe.

Fire hazards are a significant concern in a plant or manufacturing environment given the amount of electrical equipment placed on-site. But unlike a regular house fire, the flames and danger were all fake. In September, another house fire displaced a family in a Glassboro neighborhood.

"The kids really learn the importance of fire safety", she said.

With this season's very dry conditions, any fires near a corn field need to be monitored very closely. Although not all home fires can be prevented, there are plenty of preventative measures that you can take to keep your home and family safe, should you find yourselves in a heated situation.

"If it is plugged into the wall, there is still power going into it", Forbush said.
