Controversial tax on soda in Cook County Ill. could end up on the chopping block
The only two commissioners to vote against the tax were Evanston Democrat Larry Suffredin and Chicago Democrat Jerry Butler.
Chicago and many suburban areas - board committee voted 15-2 to repeal the tax, which charged individuals a penny per ounce of pop. Opponents of the tax included retailers and the American Beverage Association. "IL law required that the tax be levied on consumers, while all other cities tax beverage distributors, which is a simpler process", Krieger said in a statement.
Cook County was the sixth county in the country to tax sodas and other sweetened beverages, while Philadelphia, Berkeley, Calif. and Boulder, Colo. Almost 77 percent of those polled said they believed the tax was in order to raise money, with 11.71 percent saying it was meant to "improve health".
David Goldenberg, a spokesman for the anti-tax coalition, told Fox News that one problem with the tax was that similar beverages would be treated differently depending on how they were packaged.
Tuesday's vote was a test run via the finance committee.
Opponents of the tax said that it violated IL law as it did not apply evenly to all beverages. The ads are still running on some major TV networks in Chicago, despite commissioners last week announcing they had enough votes for a repeal which would go into effect in December.
As for how she misread pop tax opposition so badly, she said, "We're in a very hard time in this country politically".
Preckwinkle and commissioners will have to decide how they will fill an approximate $200 million budget hole that the tax would have satisfied.
