Tom Petty died Monday at the age of 66
"On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty", Petty's manager said in a statement.
Tributes have been pouring in from music's elite like Petty's Traveling Wilburys bandmate Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney, and Hollywood friends and fans.
During his long career, Tom Petty made several concert appearances in Pittsburgh, where a local promoter who often booked him for shows remembers the late Rock & Roll Hall of Famer as "a tremendous and unique talent".
"That's my favorite Tom Petty song", he explained. "So you can use his music so easily, it's nearly like cheating to use Tom Petty music with visuals [.] it's just infectious and I've not been able to wean myself from that".
Now, many of us are left to freefall into sadness; Petty is gone at 66 after suffering from cardiac arrest.
