Trump administration officials have reportedly said the USA won't pull out of the Paris Agreement after all, according to a report published Saturday by The Wall Street Journal, citing statements from the European Union's top energy official.
But the White House quickly rebuffed the notion that Trump's views on the issue have changed.
The Trump administration may not remove the United States from the Paris Agreement, a historic and vital 195 nation accord to reduce risky greenhouse gases.
Withdrawing was one of Trump's key promises during his presidential campaign.
"In order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America and its citizens, the United States will withdraw from the Paris climate accord", Mr. Trump said. It set a global goal to keep the planet from warming by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above preindustrial levels, a threshold that scientists say could keep the planet from launching into a tailspin of irreversible consequences like unpredictable superstorms and crippling heat waves.
"95% of those "abandoning Trump" over the [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals] negotiations are FAKE, astroturfed [Soros robots] pretending to be disgruntled supporters", said Bill Mitchell, who provided no evidence to support his conspiracy theory, in a Tweet. "And if we can, that's great, and if we can't, that's fine", Mr. Trump said in June. "They have also made clear that they have no intention to renegotiate". "And if we can't, that's fine".
