Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi wants to sell 40% more cars by 2022

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance

As mentioned above, the plan also calls for major expansion in electric auto technologies, alongside the development and deployment of self-driving and connectivity technologies.

Furthermore, the goal is to double annual synergies to 10 billion euros (Rs 76,440 crore) by the end of 2022.

The targets were announced as part of a new strategic plan by the alliance after its takeover of Mitsubishi previous year.

The automotive alliance that consists of French automaker Renault together with Nissan and Mitsubishi, plus their respective brands, has branded itself the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance.

Moreover, it will roll out 12 new pure electric vehicles by 2022 with 30 per cent decrease in battery cost from 2016 to 2022.

But he said there were no plans to consolidate the alliance into a single company or increase its members' cross-shareholdings, saying the strategic plan would be "respecting the companies' identities".

Alliance vehicles will share 22 engines out of 31, or 75 percent, compared to 14 shared engines among 38 previous year.

"To achieve this target, on one side Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi will accelerate collaboration on common platforms, powertrains and next-generation electric, autonomous and connected technologies".

The alliance sold more cars than any other manufacturer in the first half of 2017 and is looking to ride on its growing reach by expanding electric vehicles into the mass market.

But alliance head Carlos Ghosn, who led the turnaround of Nissan as its first-ever non-Japanese CEO, has ambitious plans for the group.

Presenting the alliance's new strategic plan to 2022, chairman Carlos Ghosn said Renault-Nissan is targeting auto sales of 14 million units by that year, a rise of almost 40 percent from current levels. This will pave the way for a long-range electric vehicle which can travel more than 600 km (372 miles). Those include a doubling of synergies to 10 billion euros from 5 billion euros, and total revenues of $240 billion from $180 billion in 2016.

Alongside the three technology building blocks, the member companies will extend their use of shared common platforms and powertrains.

Ghosn pledged to increase that figure to more than 9 million alliance vehicles on four common platforms.

The alliance said its electrification building block will involve common, scalable EV platforms for multiple segments by 2020, with a forecast that 70 per cent of EV volumes will be based on shared platforms by 2022.

He spoke in an interview in Paris after unveiling a new alliance strategy with a heavy focus on electric and autonomous cars.
