No happy start for Roy Hodgson as Crystal Palace misery continues

England ignominy spurs Hodgson on

Hodgson at the Palace

Hodgson took charge at Palace this week after Dutchman Frank de Boer was sacked following four defeats and no goals in his debut Premier League season and faces a tough challenge to rebuild confidence and turn the team's form around. They had 11 shots in all, just four of them on target, and some fans frustrations spilled over before full-time.

A far more popular substitution than Hodgson's. Hodgson is a former junior player of the Palace in the 1960s but has never managed to penetrate the first team.

"I have very good memories of those times and the people I worked with and the players I worked with, but unfortunately, it's over".

An early strike from Steven Davis after Dusan Tadic's cross had been parried by Wayne Hennessey is all that now stands between the sides, but Hodgson's men have rarely anxious, other than a Christian Benteke effort that was well saved by Fraser Forster. They did that but after about ten minutes, that game was again [going] for us.

"I still believe in the long-term, these players will pick themselves up from where they have been knocked down to", he told Sky Sports.

"The anxiety, especially in the first half, was there for all to see, in the second there were better signs, we were prepared to put our foot on the ball and pass it".

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE – Two Match Preview (Round 5)

The match marked a losing start for new Palace manager Roy Hodgson. "I saw a team that dominated the game and defended well". De Boer had retained the former two.

The Argentinian boss said: "Defensively we did really well from the beginning until the end".

"It's very hard to impose a style of play if you don't have the players to play it, that's pretty obvious", said Hodgson ahead of his first game in charge, Saturday's visit of Southampton to Selhurst Park.

Bottom-of-the-table Crystal Palace suffered a 1-0 defeat to Southampton at Selhurst Park in the lunchtime kick-off.

They picked up 20 points from 12 games under Hodgson in his first season in charge, climbing from 17th to 11th in the process.
