Use auto-play sparingly. Auto-play can be a powerful engagement tool, but it can also annoy users if undesired sound is played or they perceive unnecessary resource usage (e.g. data, battery) as the result of unwanted video playback.
The changes will be included in Google Chrome 64 and will benefit desktop and mobile users of the internet browser. Earmarked for a future build of its Chrome browser is the disabling of autoplay for videos that are accompanied by sound, Google announced in Chromium blog post. A later update will further expand Chrome's anti-autoplay features by automatically blocking autoplay videos unless they meet certain conditions. It is then that theautoplay will make its appearance (although it is planned to be integrated in Chrome-63 Canary and Dev).
Google also said that developers should also allow users to control videos using the browser's default video controls and that sound should be disabled unless a user specifically enables it. The big changes are coming in Chrome v64. CNET is a great site, but every damn page of every damn article on the entire damn site autoplays a video when you load it.
"In dialogue with the Coalition and other industry groups, we plan to have Chrome stop showing ads (including those owned or served by Google) on websites that are not compliant with the Better Ads Standards starting in early 2018". That feature will be going away, potentially paving the way for moreautoplay videos to run on devices where they were once banished entirely.
This change will continue notwithstanding when you close your program session, and after that later return, Google notes. However, anything with audio will be blocked. That's when most people will see it. You have to download the update to beta or dev manually, and canary is a standalone app. On Chrome for Android, it's expelling the block autoplay setting that is right now accessible, and it will likewise evacuate autoplay obstructing on a smartphone when the Data Saver mode is turned on.
