Google Hit With Class Action Lawsuit Over Gender Discrimination

Google sued for paying women less than men

And denying them opportunities.

The case is Ellis v. Google Inc., CGC-17-561299, California Superior Court, San Francisco County. They are seeking class action status to cover women who have worked at Google over the past four years.

Kelly Ellis a former Google employee said she started with the tech giant in 2010, her male colleague who also started at the same was paid more than Ellis.

Much of the lawsuit revolves around Google's tiered pay system.

The Labor Department is now investigating Google over accusations that it pays women less.

A Google spokeswoman said: "We disagree with the central allegations". According to a statement made to The Register by Google's senior manager of corporate communications, Gina Scigliano, the levels in which employees are placed and the promotional opportunities offered are determined through extensive committees and checks to ensure that everything is decided fairly. Weeks after Ellis was hired, the company hired a male software engineer, who had also graduated in 2006. Within weeks, a male engineer with comparable experience was hired to a higher-level position.

The women seek class certification, all wages due under California Labor Code plus 10 percent interest, restitution and damages.

Now men make up 69 percent of Google's employees - in the technical jobs it is around 80 percent.

"I have approached to revise an unavoidable issue of sexual orientation inclination at Google", Ellis said in an announcement. Accusations against Uber contributed to ex-CEO Travis Kalanick stepping down, while AR firm Magic Leap was another firm to be hit with a discrimination lawsuit earlier this year.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"Google has thrown money at the diversity problem - more than a quarter-billion dollars, according to Axios". Initial findings revealed alleged pay discrimination among the 21,000 employees at the company's headquarters at every level.

Last month, Google's Indian-born CEO Sundar Pichai addressed a coding event for women on the sprawling campus at Mountain View, California, after Damore's manifesto claimed that "the representation gap between men and women in software engineering persists because of biological differences between the two sexes".

"But Google hasn't disclosed the numbers of new hires or of exits, by gender and race".
