Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, said in a statement he wants to prevent people from "unwarranted targeting" while in the Empire State.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is headed to the U.S. Virgin Islands to assess damage from Hurricane Irma and see how his state can assist in the recovery. Additionally, Airmen from the 105th Airlift Wing deployed a satellite communication team with seven personnel to MS using a C-17 aircraft on Sunday, September 10 as part of the Hurricane Irma response and support for the Florida National Guard. Other units have traveled to Texas, Florida, Mississippi and Puerto Rico following hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
Cuomo departed Friday morning for the Caribbean islands and plans return home in the evening.
The trip likely will fuel speculation about Cuomo's interest in running for president in 2020.
NY has already deployed Air National Guard aircraft and personnel to the islands to help with search and rescue. The assessment tour and recovery mission comes after Governor Mapp requested that Governor Cuomo travel to the region to survey the damage. Mapp is a Brooklyn native and was a New York City police officer.
