Colts' Edgerrin James, Jeff Saturday among Pro Football Hall of Fame nominees
17 September 2017, 12:58 | Patty Hardy
6 former Bills listed as nominees for Pro Football Hall of Fame's 2018 class
The Pro Football Hall of Fame may have made an unfortunate error of mistaken identity.
Saturday played 14 seaons in the NFL, including his first 13 years in Indianapolis after he went undrafted in the 1998 NFL Draft. He started 180 of 182 games played, recording 1,779 tackles, 41.5 sacks, 22 interceptions, 16 fumble recoveries and 11 forced fumbles.
Steve Smith Sr., who Carolina Panthers fans and Baltimore Ravens fans alike have cherished throughout his 16-year, 1,000-catch and almost 15,000-yard career with both teams, is not actually eligible since he just retired last year (he's now an NFL Network analyst).
He's the greatest running back in Colts history, and leads the franchise in career rushing yards (9,226), rushing touchdowns (64), rushing yards per game average (96.1), rushing yards in a single season (1,709 in 2000) and most seasons with 1,000 rushing yards (five).
The roster of nominees consists of 53 offensive players, 38 defensive players, 5 special teams players and 12 coaches.
However, in a confusing and somewhat shocking announcement late on Tuesday night, it was former New York Giants wide receiverSteve Smith who was among the 108 modern-era nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
"Any fan may nominate any qualified person who has been connected with pro football in any capacity simply by writing to the Pro Football Hall of Fame". The list will be narrowed to 25 former players in November, before 15 finalists are voted on prior to this year's Super Bowl. He was a six-time Pro Bowler.
Smith's outstanding performance in 2009 also earned him his one and only trip to the Pro Bowl. Former Washington Redskins general manager Bobby Beathard is the contributor nominee. That being said, was Lynch a better player than some other notable safeties of his era, such as Steve Atwater, LeRoy Butler or Darren Woodson?
We'll find out if any of the Bills' nominees will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of their 2018 class in February.
