A group of white supremacists - screaming racial, ethnic and misogynistic epithets - rallied in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday. My brother didn't give his life fighting Hitler for Nazi ideas to go unchallenged here at home.

"Mr. President, do you want the support of these white nationalist groups who say they support you, Mr. President?"

"The President was condemning hatred, bigotry and violence from all sources and all sides", a White House official said.

One person died and 19 were injured Saturday when a vehicle rammed a crowd of counterprotesters gathered to oppose a "Unite the Right" rally of white nationalist and other right-wing groups.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides", he said from Bedminster, New Jersey.

Police declared the outbreak of violence represented an unlawful assembly and told the crowds to disperse. Trump stopped far short of Virginia Govrnor Terry McCauliffe's unequivocal condemnation of white supremacists, offering another reminder to the American public and a larger global audience, of this president's unwillingness to abandon members of his core political base. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. - Daily Stormer, a white supremacist website promoting the Charlottesville demonstration as part of its Summer of Hate edition.

Charlottesville has become a flashpoint for white nationalists following a City Council vote in February to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a park formerly called Lee Park.

Many on Twitter were left dumbfounded by the President's "many sides" call.

The Department of Justice said Saturday it has opened a civil-rights investigation into a deadly car-ramming incident that witnesses said targeted counter-protesters at a white nationalist and alt-right rally in Virginia.

Sen. Christopher Murphy said violence in Charlottesville "should be a call to action for every American who has grown complacent under the assumption that our nation's moral arc naturally bends toward inclusion and tolerance".

- "The violence, chaos, and apparent loss of life in Charlottesville is not the fault of "many sides".

"We are a great commonwealth and a great nation", McAuliffe said.

But men like David Duke, possibly the most famous white nationalist, directly tied Saturday's protests to Trump.
