A group of white supremacists - screaming racial, ethnic and misogynistic epithets - rallied in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday. My brother didn't give his life fighting Hitler for Nazi ideas to go unchallenged here at home.
"Mr. President, do you want the support of these white nationalist groups who say they support you, Mr. President?"
"The President was condemning hatred, bigotry and violence from all sources and all sides", a White House official said.
One person died and 19 were injured Saturday when a vehicle rammed a crowd of counterprotesters gathered to oppose a "Unite the Right" rally of white nationalist and other right-wing groups.
"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides", he said from Bedminster, New Jersey.
Police declared the outbreak of violence represented an unlawful assembly and told the crowds to disperse. Trump stopped far short of Virginia Govrnor Terry McCauliffe's unequivocal condemnation of white supremacists, offering another reminder to the American public and a larger global audience, of this president's unwillingness to abandon members of his core political base.
