2 dead after helicopter crashes near Charlottesville

2 dead as helicopter crashes about 7 miles from Charlottesville, Va.

The helicopter went down about seven miles southwest of Charlottesville, Va.

.

The helicopter crashed near Old Farm Road in Albemarle County, which is just outside the city.

The investigation is ongoing, NBC29 will provide more details as they come.

Police said the crash happened shortly after 5 p.m.

Senior law enforcement official confirms that Virginia State Police troopers were killed in the helicopter crash this afternoon. "There are two confirmed fatalities", Virginia State Police said in a statement on Facebook.

The helicopter was seen hovering at a low altitude over the houses before the crash occurred, witnesses told the Richmond Times Dispatch. State Police are on scene with Albemarle County police and fire units, the release states.

In the aftermath of Friday night's rally, protests stretched into Saturday - and things took a violent turn when a vehicle plowed into a crowd, killing one and injuring over a dozen others.
