For a few minutes on August 21, the moon will orbit perfectly between the earth and the sun causing total darkness to fall over 14 states, while others outside the path of the total eclipse will see a partial solar eclipse.

While the full eclipse of the sun will be happening to the north in OR, the partial eclipse on display in Stockton will see the moon blocking about 75 percent of the sun.

Almost a century later, on August 21, a new generation of scientists are preparing to conduct another slate of experiments during the first total solar eclipse over the US since 1979, and the first to span the continental USA since 1918.

"Unfortunately, when it comes to safety with a solar eclipse, 99.9 percent coverage means a 0.1 percent area of the sun that is still uncovered and is every bit as risky", Chou said.

As thousands get ready to look up at the sun, how do you know if the eclipse glasses you have are the proper ones?

There's no easier or cheaper way around this if you want to look up at the sun. In ancient India, he said, people believed that the severed head of a deity named Rahu caused eclipses by swallowing the sun. The flights are expected to net the clearest pictures of the sun's corona to date, because, at 50,000 feet above ground, the sky will be 20-30 times darker than as seen from the ground and there will be much less atmospheric turbulence. This one will be unique, as it travels more than 3,000 miles over land, where tens of millions of Americans will be able to view it, a vast difference from many eclipses that occur over oceans or remote regions of the Earth, CNN reports.

Eclipse glasses are being given away at McCracken County, Graves County and Calloway County libraries, but only during eclipse-related events.

"It turns out - here's your word for the day: Saros - that the geometry of the Sun and Earth and Moon repeats with a period of 18 years, 11 days and eight hours, nearly exactly". There's another good chance to see a total eclipse in Oklahoma on April 8, 2024. The eclipse will peak, with the maximum surface of the sun covered, around 2:33 p.m., and that will last about two minutes and 31 seconds.

Combined with measurements of the ionosphere during the eclipse, they will have information on both the solar input and corresponding ionosphere response, enabling them to study the mechanisms underlying ionospheric changes better than ever before. Other states where the complete solar eclipse can be seen are Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska and Montana.

The instant the totality is over, immediately look away and put the special glasses back on. Use the hashtag #Eclipse2017 and tag @NASAGoddard to connect your photos on social media to those taken around the country and share them with NASA. You can also make sort of a homemade projector and in fact I'm doing that with my students.

If you haven't placed an order yet - or your glasses are arriving after the solar eclipse - don't panic yet. Some people will be staying in hotels here and driving to other towns to see a longer eclipse view. Catch the image of the eclipse on another piece of white cardstock held behind the pinhole.
