Roger Federer sets up Rogers Cup final with Alexander Zverev

13 August 2017, 10:56 | Andy Ferguson

The fourth-seeded Zverev, seeking a second tournament title in as many weeks, advanced to the final on Sunday against second-seeded Roger Federer, a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victor over unseeded Robin Haase of the Netherlands.

Notably, if Federer can win in Montreal and outperform or match Nadal's run in the upcoming Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, he can reclaim the numero uno tag after a five-year hiatus. Recovered from 0-30 in game 11 of the second set, as Zverev put increasing pressure on his serve, then had Zverev's back to the wall in game 12 before it went down as most experts had predicted it would. Federer can also deploy a superb forehand and one of the most accurate serves in the game, whilst Haase's own delivery can at times grow shaky.

But while Ferrer managed to take the opening set - ending Federer's 32-set streak - the Swiss ace raised his game to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Federer had to rally from a set down to beat Spanish veteran David Ferrer 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a match that lasted three minutes shy of two hours. It was the fourth time in five matches he lost the first set, but this time there was no coming back.

"It's what I dreamed of all my life growing up, playing guys like Rafa (Nadal), Roger (Federer), Andy (Murray)", said Shapovalov, who moved to Canada before his first birthday. "I got some decent rhythm going".

But this time Denis Shapovalov didn't get the win.

"I'm very happy that I've made it here", he said.

Alex Tanney replaced Mariota and was sacked by linebacker Julian Stanford on his first play and briefly left the game. The strong-armed passer delivered the ball with good velocity and wasn't helped by a couple of drops.

With top seed Rafael Nadal knocked out in the third round by Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov, 19-time grand slam victor Federer is thick in the fight for a return to the top of the ATP list.

"I have reached levels that I never thought I would be able to reach, winning so many titles", Federer told the ATP's website. The final is at 6pm on Sunday.

Federer, now ranked third, won 6-3 7-6 in Saturday's first semi-final and will next play Denis Shapolov or Alexander Zverev for the trophy on Sunday.

After Wozniacki sent Pliskova packing, American Sloane Stephens saved three match points and muscled her way past Lucie Safarova in a three-set thriller. Most recently, amid speculation that he could be nearing retirement, Federer took a six month break from tennis to nurse an ailing knee. Number one for me was anyway something for later in the year. I haven't played him that much yet. Federer has won 15 straight matches on hard court.

Haase, who upset seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov in the third round, was in his first career semifinal of a Masters Series tournament.

As an 18-year-old on wild card entry to the tournament, this event was supposed to be an opportunity for him to earn experience, maybe win a match or two and perhaps get a few balls signed by one of his idols after losing to them.
