Their preparations have been dented somewhat by full-back Danny Rose's controversial comments - for which he offered an apology on Friday - after he hinted that he might have to leave the club to win the trophies he craves.

He went on urge Spurs to sign "well-known" players and added: "I know my worth and I will make sure I get what I am worth".

With Rose and fellow long-term absentee Erik Lamela sidelined through injury and Kyle Walker sold to Manchester City, Spurs have depleted options to choose from at St James' Park.

"When you sign players like Eric Dier, who are internationals today, nobody knew them, or Dele Alli who was in League One or [N'Golo] Kante".

The Tottenham left-back also claimed he and his team-mates were underpaid in a shock blast that was far from ideal preparation for the trip to Newcastle on Sunday.

My words were not meant to offend and for that I would like to apologise to the chairman, manager, my team mates and the fans. If they do not continue to improve and pick up some silverware in the coming season then they may face the possibility of losing their key players to better clubs, which would put Pochettino and Levy right back at the start of their project.

It is hard when you have a good team and a clear philosophy and the plan you want to follow, it is not easy to find the right profile [of player]. "Now we move on". Ross Barkley and Juan Foyth have both been linked with joining last season's runners-up, yet no deals have been completed, leaving Pochettino with a squad weaker than the one which ended last term.

"When you see the market it is a price that can surprise us", said Pochettino. We are so calm.

"Over the last five years Tottenham have always signed players and spent money at the end of the window", he said. The team is ready to compete.

Spurs enjoyed a strong campaign last season with a second-placed finish in the Premier League, but they enter the new season with real uncertainty over the club's title chances.

"I was telling the players that we can not make excuses, so we have to be ready and try to win the games and that's it".
