Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has submitted a transfer request, hours after the Premier League club released a statement saying he is not for sale.

"I had to sell a lot of players in my managerial career".

Barcelona is looking for a replacement for Neymar, who was sold to Paris Saint-Germain for a world-record fee of 222 million euros ($262 million) last week.

Having declared that the club's want-away Brazil forward Philippe Coutinho is not for sale, Klopp may need to strengthen his back four who looked completely at sea nearly every time the home side came forward.

"We're not a selling club so they're going to do everything in their power for him to stay". If bosses decide, for example, we sell a player then I have to accept it. I am responsible for all of players, not just one, two or three.

"I can not say a lot about it", he said. "Pre-season is over now and everybody's happy, I think we played a good pre-season and we can go with confidence into the new season".

Liverpool showed familiar defensive weaknesses after conceding a trio of soft goals including a stoppage-time equaliser in an absorbing 3-3 Premier League draw at Watford.

Asked if Coutinho's transfer request could change the club's stance, Klopp added: "You have to ask the club".

"You'll have to ask the club".

"I think Jurgen Klopp's got it under control, I think FSG have got it under control, and they're the key", he explained. I don't make the decision.

The Daily Telegraph's chief sports writer Paul Hayward says Coutinho would be a great loss to Liverpool, and believes Barcelona could have made their approach earlier. After a decent start which saw the Hornets in the top half of the table for much of the first part of last season, Watford descended into the relegation-watch zone, finishing the campaign with five straight losses.

Watford began the encounter impressive by giving the Reds flurry of attacks before a defensive gaffe gave them the first goal in the 8th minutes through Stefano Okaka.

Firmino's current deal at the Merseysiders is due to expire in 2020, although the club see him as an asset and will want to button down his signature for as long as possible as his personal game at the forefront of the match-day squad continues to flourish.
