Authorities inspect the site of tragedy

The landslide happened on the national highway that connects Manali and Mandi, shortly after midnight. As per a Times of India report, one of the bus was on its way to Katra in Jammu from Manali, while the other was on its way to Chamba from Manali. "A bus had also rolled down to almost 800 m from the National Highway and four people have been rescued from the debris". Three of the eight persons aboard the bus died.

Locals told the administration that they vacated their homes and ran towards the forest area minutes before the entire mountain dislocated and slid down.

Several houses were washed away in the torrential rain that hit the Mandi region in the Himalayan foothills. The area has been witnessing heavy rains. Five injured persons were taken to a hospital.

In a post on Facebook, Himachal Pradesh transport minister GS Bali said that rescue operations have been underway at the site since 2 am and also Indian Army has been called in to assist considering the seriousness of the situation.
