Giroud's late goal powers Arsenal past Leicester City

GETTY Arsene Wenger has handed Premier League debuts to Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette

The visitors took the lead again 10 minutes into the second stanza as Vardy grabbed his brace with a cute header from close range.

Giroud scored the winning penalty in the Community Shield last Sunday and, having finished last season with the best goalscoring ratio of any Arsenal striker, continued that form by coming on last night to clinch victory in a dramatic seven-goal thriller.

Against a plucky Leicester side at a packed and tense Emirates Stadium, Arsene Wenger's men scored twice in the last 10 minutes - first through substitute Aaron Ramsey before the much-maligned Giroud headed in the victor off Granit Xhaka's corner.

Alexandre Lacazette gave Arsenal an early lead before Shinji Okazaki and Jamie Vardy put Leicester ahead.

Aaron Ramsey came off the bench to level with eight minutes remaining before Giroud wrapped up the points.

England striker Jamie Vardy, who was heavily linked with Arsenal 12 months ago, scored a brace either side of a Danny Welbeck leveller that showed Arsenal's rearguard to be equally awful from open play and set-piece situations. Although Arsenal signed off in May by lifting the FA Cup, a fifth-place finish ensured the north London club failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in two decades.

Giroud had been linked with an exit during the summer, and Wenger admitted he considered allowing his most authentic target man to leave but the 30-year-old resisted the idea. I opened the door for him because I know it's important for him to play but I don't want him to go. But I don't want him to go and in the end he made a decision to stay. "We were quite good a year ago on corners and overall I believe that with a bit of work we can get that out of the system", the French coach added.

"So overall I think he adapts slowly to the way we want to play and is a collective player and an intelligent player as well".
