Former Red Wings coach Bryan Murray dies of cancer at 74

Murray announced that he was battling Stage 4 colon cancer in November 2014.

Murray also coached the team for a time.

"Bryan Murray's strength and character were reflected in the teams he coached and the teams he built over decades of front office excellence", Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. In seven full seasons with Washington, Bryan led the team to the playoffs each year, and won the Jack Adams Award in 1984.

"As we mourn Bryan's passing, we celebrate his many contributions to the game - as well as his courage".

Ironically, it was Getzlaf and Perry as promising second-year players that would help deny Murray a Cup in 2007 when the Ducks won in five games with the personable, competitive coach behind the Senators bench.

Besides coaching the Capitals, Murray was behind the bench of the Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Anaheim Mighty Ducks and Ottawa Senators where he served as both head coach and general manager. He took over as Ottawa's coach during the 2005-06 season and responded by leading the team to the Conference Final.

The Red Wings organization would like to extend its deepest condolences to the Ottawa Senators organization and all of Murray's family and friends during this most hard time. Under his leadership, the Capitals saw the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

After leaving Detroit, Murray took four years off being head coach, returning in the 1997-98 season as a mid-season replacement. "He was just an unbelievable guy where as a player you could sit down and have a beer with your coach and talk hockey, talk family, talk sports, talk anything and he was a guy that was there for you". Hall of Famer Larry Robinson said Murray's death made for a "sad day for hockey".

However, he admits that in Lukaku they have got someone who can score goals regularly for them. If the answer is no you need to take a long, hard look at yourself.

While best known for his work as a GM and National Hockey League coach Murray is also fondly remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, doting grandfather and loyal friend.

Shortly after Murray was hired by the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League and on November 11, 1981 made his move to the NHL when he was hired by the Washington Capitals.

Murray coached 1,239 regular-season and 112 playoff games over parts of 18 seasons.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Murray family", Senators captain Erik Karlsson tweeted.

Murray said he wanted his legacy to be cancer awareness.

"He would come in and just sit down with guys", he said.

Most recently, the native of Shawville, Quebec was serving as a special advisor to Ottawa GM Pierre Dorion after stepping down from that position in April 2016.

Among the many moves Murray made with the Panthers in his six-plus seasons: drafting Ed Jovanovski and Radek Dvorak; trading for Pavel Bure, Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen; and trading the likes of Dvorak, Jovanovski and Stu Barnes. "He wasn't a very good skater", Fletcher said.
