Fipronil - UK grocers pull food lines, Dutch make arrests
12 August 2017, 09:58 | Terri Saunders
Eggs are destroyed at a chicken farm in Nadrin Houffalize
At least 700,000 eggs implicated in the fipronil scandal have been imported into the United Kingdom, far more than initial estimates, the Food Standards Agency has confirmed.
United Kingdom grocers Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons and Waitrose have recalled pre-packed sandwich and salad lines found to have contained eggs contaminated with the fipronil insecticide said to have been used by a Dutch poultry services company to combat lice in chickens.
In the United Kingdom, an estimated 7,00,000 eggs containing this insecticide are believed to have been distributed - a figure 33 times higher than was originally estimated.
It added that numerous eggs involved were mixed with other eggs which have not come from affected farms so Fipronil residues will be highly diluted.
While a large number of contaminated eggs would need to be eaten to affect a person's health, fipronil is considered moderately toxic and can cause damage to the organs.
Previously, the agency had believed only 21,000 potentially contaminated eggs had made it to the UK.
There is no evidence any British eggs have been contaminated but testing on United Kingdom farms are underway.
The European Commission has called for an emergency summit to deal with the fallout of the contaminated eggs scare. "Singapore does not import eggs from the affected countries in Europe", said AVA in a Facebook post.

Supermarkets in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany also withdrew millions of eggs from sale.
Police arrested two people on Thursday in raids on companies in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Fipronil, which is banned by the EU's food industry, had been linked to a Dutch supplier of cleaning products by authorities.
Around 85% of eggs consumed in Britain are laid in the UK.
Nikolas Hove from the Danish Veterinary and Food administration assured the public that although the levels of Fipronil found in the eggs are illegal, there are no urgent health risks.
Andriukaitis said he hoped to convene a meeting before the end of September of the ministers and representatives of various national food safety agencies.
FSA chairman Heather Hancock said she was "confident" that acting quickly was the right thing to do. "Consumers clearly want retailers and food manufacturers to use good quality British ingredients that are produced to high standards of food safety, but in some prepared foods this is not the case".

Pochettino forgives Rose for Spurs 'Google' jibe
We are so calm. "Over the last five years Tottenham have always signed players and spent money at the end of the window", he said. My words were not meant to offend and for that I would like to apologise to the chairman, manager, my team mates and the fans.
