Fidget Spinners Are Catching Fire, Choking Children

CPSC Safety Guidance for Fidget Spinners

Safety Regulators Issue Safety Alert For Still-Popular Fidget Spinners

It's a harmless fad, but months after we've all grown exhausted of even thinking about the things, the federal government is here to make sure you don't kill yourself, kill everyone around you, and burn down your neighborhood with a small spinning toy.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a fidget spinner safety guidance to help consumers understand the ways in which the product can be harmful. However, the spinners contain small plastic and metal parts, which form a choking hazard in the wrong hands.

As a result, the agency simply recommends keeping the products away from children under three years of age. Consumers should always be present when the product is charging, never charge it overnight and always use the cable it came with, the statement said.

The CPSC reports that there have been reports of children as old as 14 experiencing choking incidents with fidget spinners.

They're popular and they're fun to play with but, some people could get hurt.

Marines Order 24-Hour Halt to Flight Operations for All Aircraft
The ministry has judged that it is appropriate to request the USA military take the utmost care for safety when flying Ospreys. In December a "controlled landing " of an Osprey just off the Okinawan coast during a training flight sparked local anger.

Disappointingly, the CPSC does not warn against attempting to sharpen the edges of the fidget spinner so it becomes a ninja star.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission today confirmed that it is investigating a number of incidents associated with the toys, while also outlining precautions users should take before unwrapping fidget spinners.

Some fidget spinners also have batteries in them to operate little lights, so if you have one of those, go make sure your smoke detectors are in working order right this minute!

As for battery-operated fidget spinners, the CPSC says it is important to use the charging cable that either comes with the fidget spinner or one that has the correct connections for the device as charging cables are not interchangeable.

CPSC business requirements and guidelines for fidget spinners are available in our Business Education Center.
