In today's final, the Swiss veteran will face the victor of the second semifinal between 18-year-old Denis Shapovalov and 20-year-old Alexander Zverev. In the final, Federer topped Croatian Marin Cilic in straight sets (6-3, 6-1, 6-4) in a one-sided, 101-minute match, earning his first Grand Slam title on grass courts since 2012.

The first signs of the player who beat Rafael Nadal less than 24 hours earlier came in the fifth game when Shapovalov fought off five break points to win his first game, but Mannarino served out the set.

The stirring comebacks that 18-year-old Shapovalov used to become the youngest player to reach the semifinals of a Masters 1000 Series tournament died out when 20-year-old Zverev proved a little sharper and downed the Richmond Hill, Ont., lefthander 6-4, 7-5 on Saturday night.

Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain outlasted Frenchman Gael Monfils for a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2) victory in the third round of the men's Rogers Cup on Thursday.

"If I would have known I would have gone to the finals, I would have said "yes" right away".

Federer saw his streak of winning 32 consecutive sets end against David Ferrer but bounced back to reach the last eight. "I just told him that this is the beginning for him". I believe it's because today I was more aggressive coming to the net.

Federer will face Robin Haase of the Netherlands, who defeated Diego Schwartzman 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 earlier in the day.

Fourth seeded Alexander Zverev defeated South Africa's Kevin Anderson in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 to set up a clash of rising stars with Shapovalov. I just played loose after that, just went with it.

Federer responded quickly in the second set, going a break up to lead 3-2 before holding for a 4-2 lead. "You know, he had a good start, I had a better finish".

"I've been against the wall a couple times this week and I'm very happy I've come out several times just playing really good tennis in those situations", said Shapovalov.

That set the stage for Federer to wrap up the contest in relatively short order and he will be firm favourite to down Haase in the last four of a tournament he last won in 2006. This will be the first match on hard court.

"I'm looking forward to a tough match because he can serve very well and he mixes up his tactics a lot", said Federer. I haven't played him that much yet.
