OPINION | Putin Xi set to play heroes of North Korea crisis

The top US intelligence official said on Sunday he would not be surprised if North Korea tested another missile, given that it had two tests in July, amid rising tensions between the two nations.

But he rejected talk of the USA being on the "cusp of nuclear war".

This AP file photo shows CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

Referring to Kim, Trump added: "If he utters one threat. or if he does anything with respect to Guam or any place else that's an American territory or an American ally, he will truly regret it, and he will regret it fast".

He said President Trump was just trying to give the country's people hope when he floated the idea on Friday that the United States would take military action after condemning Venezuelan leader Nicholas Maduro for human rights abuses and calling for him to hold "free and fair elections".

In response, North Korea announced a detailed plan to fire ballistic missiles towards Guam, a USA territory in the Pacific. "We've engaged the world to support that policy", Pompeo told host Chris Wallace.

That was the second missile alleged to be an ICBM to be tested by the regime of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, after on July 4, it carried out a ballistic missile test, and claimed that the rocket was the much coveted intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

"He responds to adverse circumstances", he said. Us has sponsored over the Pyongyang nuclear missile weapon programs by Changing the new economic sanction.

In a separate interview on ABC News, Trump's national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, struck a similar tone.

"Our response is we are prepared militarily to deal with this if necessary".

He played down the gravity of Trump's tweet Friday that the US military is "locked and loaded" to respond to North Korea's threats.

"Imports of fuel, food, fertilizers, other various raw materials and daily necessities will drop significantly soon, possibly within a few months", Ri said, highlighting the broad impact the sanctions will likely have on North Korea's overall economy.

China has repeatedly called for dialogue to peacefully resolve the mounting tensions, but its proposal for North Korea to suspend its weapons programs in exchange for the United States and South Korea halting joint military drills has been ignored.

Mr Trump said the U.S. military was "locked and loaded", while Pyongyang has accused him of "driving" the Korean peninsula to the "brink of a nuclear war". "But the goal of capable, ready forces is to preserve peace and prevent war".
