'I planned it all': Glen Campbell on cocaine, God, and working with Sinatra

Musicians pay tribute and celebrate the life of Glen Campbell

Campbell's all-round appeal lay in the way he effortlessly bridged the worlds of country music and pop, The Times says, adding the star would say he was "not a country singer, but a country boy who sings".

After a few years passed and a sense of personal appreciation for popular music heightened, Campbell's gifts began to reveal themselves.

The tumultuous years of the mid and late '70s took a toll on Campbell.

Lenny Kravitz: "Besides being an incredible solo artist, Glen Campbell was also a genius studio musician - as part of the Wrecking Crew - playing on recordings from The Beach Boys to Frank Sinatra".

During a 55-year career, Campbell released more than 60 albums and sold 45 million records. It was the pairing of a lifetime. Campbell's biggest hits include Wichita Lineman, All I Have to Do is Dream, Honey Come Back and Rhinestone Cowboy.

Campbell couldn't resist the allure of Hollywood.

The statement confirmed that he had died "following his long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease" and noted that fans could donate to the Glen Campbell Memorial Fund at BrightFocus Foundation in his memory via his CareLiving.org donation page.

Campbell's death comes nearly two months after the release of his album, Adios, featuring songs from his Goodbye Tour, which followed his diagnosis in 2011.

Truth be told, Campbell's work sagged during the early "70s". "I owe him everything I am, and everything I ever will be".

"I'm Not Gonna Miss You", which was recorded with members of Phil Spector's famous Wrecking Crew band, was based on a comment that Campbell mentioned to his co-writer and producer Julian Raymond when people would bring up his disease.

Campbell left home at the age of 14, performing on radio and television in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before landing in Los Angeles in 1960. One of Campbell's daughters, Ashley, said she was heartbroken.

"Glen just fit right in, he was so doggone good", Rumble recalls.

Still, Campbell tried to remain true to his humble beginnings.

His family made the announcement on Facebook.

I parted ways with his music after that, which was when Campbell's celebrity status became tabloid fodder. It is something former US President and fellow Arkansan Bill Clinton said he would long be remembered for - perhaps even more so than his music.

The message accompanied a short video in which Parton said: "Glen Campbell was special because he was so gifted".
