USA boosts seasonal worker visas halfway through summer season

The president issued an executive order in April directing the government to look into weak enforcement and loopholes relating to temporary employment laws for foreign workers.

The Trump administration announced Monday an increase in seasonal worker visas that U.S. resorts depend on, but the move halfway through the summer is unlikely to alleviate a nationwide shortage.

The increase in H-2b visas available for American businesses came after DHS consulted with the Department of Labor and was granted authority by Congress' recent omnibus spending bill, a senior DHS official told reporters.

To receive the visas, businesses must attest they would suffer irreparable harm if they can not bring in those workers.

The additional 15,000 visas stack on top of the 33,000 that the Department of Homeland Security has already allotted for the second half of the current fiscal year.

LLC Takes Position in BlackRock, Inc. (BLK)
Revenue for the quarter also did not kill consensus, coming in at $2.82 Billion, compared to the consensus of 2.87 Billion. BlackRock also earned $5.22 per share in the second quarter, also short of the $5.39 per share analysts were modeling.

Businesses who meet specific criteria can apply for H-2B visas to bring over foreign workers to take temporary positions they cannot fill with American workers.

In June seven senators representing states with important summer vacation destinations asked DHS to double the number of H-2B visas. "So we do think that fits into the American-first focus of the administration".

Daniel Costa, an immigration expert at the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute, said there is no real evidence of a nationwide labor shortage in the industries that rely on H-2B visas, although employers could be strapped in certain geographic areas.

The United States government has sanctioned a crackdown on visitors with visa overstays.

Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA, a group that favors reduced immigration levels, said in a statement the decision "threatens to reverse the trend of reports emerging around the country of employers working harder and raising pay to successfully recruit more unemployed Americans for lower-skilled jobs". "As a demonstration of the administration's commitment to supporting American businesses, DHS is providing this one-time increase to the congressionally set annual cap".
