Workers and security personnel detain the man who stabbed two German tourists to death and wounded four others during an attack at the Zahabia hotel resort in Hurghada south of the capital Cairo Egypt

Rashed made the comments to TV talk-show host Amr Adib on his programme Kol Youm late on Saturday.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack, but it appeared to have been inspired by recent calls by the local affiliate of the extremist Islamic State group to attack Egypt's minority Christians and foreign tourists.

He added that the ministry is in touch with tour operators overseas, including in Germany, and that no cancellations have been reported. The ministry would continue to monitor the situation, he said.

A man armed with a knife killed two Ukrainian tourists Friday and wounded four other foreign holidaymakers, all women, at Hurghada resort, in the Red Sea, few hours after gunmen killed five security forces in their vehicle early in the morning, South of Cairo.

The attack occurred at a seafront hotel in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Hurghada.

Investigators believe the attacker swam from a public beach, according to the ministry. All the 244 people on board, mostly Russian tourists, were killed.

Germany topped the list of visiting tourists during the first three months of 2017, followed by Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, China and the United Kingdom.

On Saturday, tight security was in place at the site of the Hurghada attack. He rushed into the hotel next door, where he attacked and wounded four female tourists before being subdued and turned over to police.

"It has not been proven to the prosecution if it was an isolated attack or a criminal or terrorist incident", the Security Prosecution said in a statement.

"Some sources noted that the two victims are foreigners who are staying in Hurghada, where they work".

"We don't know his motives yet, he could be insane or perturbed - it's too early to tell", a senior interior ministry official told AFP.
