Virgin DS Racing's Sam Bird celebrates his NYC ePrix win with owner Richard Branson

Race 1 victor Sam Bird will start today's second Qualcomm New York City ePrix from pole position after defeating Felix Rosenqvist by just 0.037s in a thrilling qualifying session.

Bird started the race from pole position, but Mahindra Racing driver Felix Rosenqvist passed Bird in the first corner.

From there, Bird was able to quickly open up a gap over the chasing Mahindras, sitting around two seconds clear before a second full course yellow soon after the pit window opened put the Briton's advantage in the lurch.

Lucas di Grassi finished off the podium again, but another top-five finish means he goes to the final two races in Montreal just 10 points behind championship leader Sebastien Buemi.

Behind Bird and Vergne, Venturi's Maro Engel took third, 0.002s faster than NEXTEV driver Oliver Turvey, while Nelson Piquet and Dillmann were fifth and sixth behind their teammates.

On Saturday, he became the first victor of the New York City ePrix after holding off Jean-Eric Vergne and Stephane Sarrazin, both of whom belong to Techeetah Racing.

Rosenqvist took second place for Mahindra ahead of teammate Nick Heidfeld, the pair having swapped positions late on in a bid to aid the Swede's loose title hopes. Renault e.dams driver Pierre Gasly caught the Mahindra duo in the dying moments of the race.

He had to settle for fourth after his error, although still managed to get ahead of Mahindra's Nick Heidfeld, who had a scruffy lap.

ABT driver Lucas Di Grassi who is now second on the standings finished fifth ahead of Nico Prost's Renault.

But Gasly made a mistake and ran wide and damaged the front end of the vehicle. "Hats off to DS Virgin Racing for giving what was the best vehicle they've ever given me".
