The movie starring Woody Harrelson ended up about the same as 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes which kicked off the modern trilogy with $54.8 million during its opening weekend.
The movie earned $5 million in Thursday night previews alone, and then pulled in $22 million from 4,022 theaters on Friday.
This weekend, 20th Century Fox'sWar For The Planet Of The Apes went toe-to-toe with Marvel/Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming, and - somewhat surprisingly - the Apes emerged victorious. The movie fell 61.4 percent to $45.2 million, bringing it to a domestic total of $208.3 million but representing a larger drop than similar recent films like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (56 percent) and Wonder Woman (43 percent). Broad Green averaged a weak $2,483 from 2,250 locations from just the U.S.as Canada did not open this weekend. Sony's Baby Driver eased only 33% in its third lap for an estimated $8.8M pushing the cume to $73.2M. This brings the movie's domestic total to $188 million - which is much lower than predecessors Despicable Me 2 ($276 million) and Minions ($262.4 million) at this point in the movie's box office run.
