Academy Award-Winning Actor Martin Landau Dies at 89

THR has confirmed that Martin Landau, who won an Academy Award playing Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood, died on Saturday of unexpected complications at UCLA Medical Center on Saturday.

It's fitting that Martin Landau played master of disguise Rollin Hand on the old Mission: Impossible series.

Although he had previously been nominated for an Oscar, Landau broke through and won the golden statue for his best supporting actor portrayal of horror movie legend Bela Lugosi in the 1994 film, "Ed Wood", directed by Tim Burton.

He left "Mission: Impossible" after three seasons in 1969 because of a contract dispute.

He and Bain co-starred in the syndicated sci-fi series "Space: 1999" in the mid-1970s; although stylishly made, it flopped. Landau would ultimately be instrumental in opening a West Coast branch of the Studio, and he'd continue teaching for the rest of his life.

Robinson, Landau drew the eye Alfred Hitchcock, who was so impressed with Landau's performance that he cast him in a pivotal role in North By Northwest.

Landau attended James Madison High School and the Pratt Institute. At age 17, he worked as a cartoonist at the New York Daily News, where he remained for five years. In 1968, Landau took the Golden Globe award as best male television star.

With his dark hair and penetrating blue eyes, Landau found success on NY stages in Goat Song, Stalag 17 and First Love.

Landau appeared in Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone, and in 2011, he lent his voice to an episode of the animated series The Simpsons. Surviving Landau are his daughters, Susan Landau Finch and Juliet Rose Landau, both of whom are from his marriage to Bain, and both of whom followed their father into film and television.
