With Self-Imposed Deadline Looming, Where Does Senate Stand On Health Plan?

20 June 2017, 09:58 | Todd Saunders

That proposal has been sent to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) for analysis, a Senate GOP aide said.

The Senate could vote as early as next Thursday on legislation to reader the US health care system, a lawmaker and lobbyists tell CQ Roll Call. She made clear that Trump, a businessman and real estate mogul by trade, wants faster results.

Democrats also intend to hold control of the Senate floor until late in the evening, delivering a series of speeches urging Republicans to make the health bill public.

But it's not as easy as simply summarizing the priorities of the 52-member Senate Republican conference.

To the Editor: While all eyes were on James Comey, Mitch McConnell, Senate majority leader, set about destroying health care coverage for Americans.

"If Republicans won't relent and debate their health care bill in the open for the American people to see, then they shouldn't expect business as usual in the Senate", Schumer added.

Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said: "If we don't succeed, both sides will lose". Mr Davis said Britain hadn't backed down.

The letter is signed by Republican Governors John Kasich of Ohio, Charles Baker of MA and Brian Sandoval of Nevada, as well as Democratic Governors John Kickenlooper of Colorado, Steve Bullock of Montana, Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania and John Bel Edwards of Louisiana.

While several lobbyists say McConnell is likely close on the 50 votes he needs to advance the legislation - assuming a tie-breaker vote from Vice President Mike Pence - they were not confident about the bill's passage. In the six weeks since the House of Representatives passed its Obamacare repeal legislation, Senate Republicans have insisted they will craft their own bill, but few details have emerged. That's what McConnell is absolutely counting on, making the fight for Democrats a much harder one. In fact, according to NBC News, even Republicans don't know what the hell is in this thing.

A spokesman for McConnell declined to comment. After he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, Williams said he struggled to get the insurance he needed to have surgery and then, what he called "aggressive chemo". On Sunday, he said that some of the health insurance coverage mandates would get rid by unveiling Obamacare replacement bill with an aim to bring down cost of insurance.

"Nobody's hiding the ball here", the Kentucky Republican said last week. But it will highlight the secrecy around the health care debate as Republicans rush to finish the bill before their Fourth of July recess.

And they are looking to use all parliamentary procedures available to them to slow down not only any business relating to health care but any other Senate business, including floor votes and committee hearings. The rules are supposed to apply only to budget legislation, such tax bills and spending cuts.
