US Student Released From Detention In North Korea, Otto Warmbier Has Died

20 June 2017, 10:03 | Terri Saunders

Tillerson said that "we hold North Korea accountable for Otto Warmbier's unjust imprisonment and demand the release of three other Americans who have been illegally detained".

Young Pioneer Tours, the group with which Warmbier travelled to North Korea, will no longer be organising tours for U.S. citizens to the isolated country, Troy Collings, a company director at the group, said in a statement after his death.

His family said in a statement that "the bad torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans" meant that "no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today". "Surrounded by his loving family, Otto died today at 2:20 p.m.", his family said in a statement said, the CNN reported.

The Republican president says University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier (WORM'-bir) spent a year and a half in North Korea before returning last week to the Cincinnati area, where his parents were "so happy to see him even though he was in very tough condition". There, doctors stated that Otto had sustained injuries that stemmed from cardiopulmonary arrest and his scans showed that there was an enormous loss to every single region of his brain.

Otto Warmbier, the University of Virginia student who was taken prisoner in North Korea, has died. "There has still been nearly no information disclosed about his period in detention", it said. Although we would never hear his voice again, within a day the countenance of his face changed - he was at peace. "He was home, and we believe he could sense that", the statement said.

In the spring of 2016, Warmbier signed up for a trip to North Korea with the Young Pioneer Tours travel group, a company that takes participants to places they wouldn't normally go.

I just wanted to pass on word that Otto Warmbier has just passed away. There is nothing more tragic for a parent than to lose a child in the prime of life.

We thank everyone around the world who has kept him and our family in their thoughts and prayers.

Mr Warmbier was transferred back to the United States after over a year in North Korean captivity.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Otto Warmbier's death as a result of his treatment in North Korea could increase calls for the USA to take a tougher line on China, as the two nations prepare to meet in Washington on Wednesday.

His death is expected to further exacerbate the already tense relations between the U.S. and the North. U.S. media, including the Washington Post, have called for stronger sanctions on Pyongyang after Warmbier's comatose release.
