Thousands gather to bid Otto Warmbier farewell

As pallbearers carried Warmbier's casket out to the hearse, people outside the school stood in silence. Warmbier was to be buried at a Cincinnati cemetery.

"The fact that Warmbier died suddenly in less than a week just after his return to the U.S.in his normal state of health indicators is a mystery to us as well", the spokesman said. Blue and white ribbons, the colors of Wyoming High School, were tied to the fence there.

Earlier in the week, after announcing Mr Warmbier's death, President Trump said he was determined to "prevent such tragedies from befalling innocent people at the hands of regimes that do not respect the rule of law or basic human decency".

North Korea has dismissed accusations of torturing US university student and said death of Otto Warmbier soon after his return home was "a mystery" to them as well.

The North Koreans had told USA officials that Warmbier slipped in a coma after contracting botulism and taking a sleeping pill.

Doctors found he had suffered a "severe neurological injury" of unknown cause after he returned to the U.S. Warmbier's family objected to an autopsy, so the Hamilton County coroner's office conducted only an external examination of his body.

Warmbier's brother, sister and friends spoke at the service, NPR member station WVXU in Cincinnati reports. His family was told that he had been in a coma since shortly after he was sentenced to prison with hard labor in March 2016.

Mr Warmbier was scheduled to graduate this year from the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce.

United States doctors say there is no evidence he suffered from botulism, and the Warmbier family believe he died as a result of "awful torturous mistreatment".

"He was genuine and authentic, and so smart".

Warmbier was accused of trying to steal a propaganda banner while visiting North Korea in 2015 and was later convicted of subversion. He was arrested just before departing Pyongyang International Airport.

Warmbier's treatment was "appalling", U.S. Senator Rob Portman of OH told reporters outside the memorial.

Warmbier's death has heightened tensions aggravated by dozens of North Korean missile launches and two nuclear bomb tests since previous year.
