Senate Democrats Begin Effort to Slow Down GOP Health Care Bill

20 June 2017, 10:58 | Gladys Abbott

"If Republicans won't relent and debate their health care bill in the open for the American people to see, then they shouldn't expect business as usual in the Senate", Schumer said.

Democrats planned a series of steps Monday night to gum up Senate procedure.

Whether it's the process used by Republicans to ram their disastrous Obamacare repeal through Congress or the way they have undercut the current health care system, Democrats are right to hold their feet to the fire.

The letter from the Republican Study Committee, which has more than 150 members, states that its members have "serious concerns regarding recent reports suggesting that the Senate's efforts to produce a reconciliation bill repealing the Affordable Care Act are headed in a direction that may jeopardize final passage in the House of Representatives", according to a copy of the draft obtained by USA TODAY.

"Republicans are drafting this bill in secret because they're ashamed of it, plain and simple", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, shortly before Democrats took to the Senate floor in anger. They also plan to hold the Senate floor tonight with speeches about health care.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell organized a 13-person working group to rewrite the House-passed measure.

McConnell, R-Ky., is using closed-door meetings among Republicans to write a bill. We have not had one hearing, not one open discussion.

They threatened to slow the Senate's work with procedural motions.

Osborne was taken into custody shortly after the attack when bystanders in the crowd restrained him until police arrived. Witness Khalid Amin told BBC television that the driver of the van was shouting: "I want to kill all Muslims".

Democrats say the closed talks are a tacit acknowledgment by Republicans that their efforts are unpopular.

The president has previously praised the House legislation, calling it a "great plan" during a celebratory press conference with Republican lawmakers after they passed the bill.

With just 10 legislative days before McConnell's deadline, all that most lawmakers and the public have to work on is the House bill, which a non-partisan congressional review predicted would leave 23 million fewer people insured over the next decade.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters Monday that "we feel very good about the progress that's happening".

Still, Senate Republicans badly want to take up other priorities such as overhauling the country's tax code.

"We're going to have a meeting on the Senate floor, all hundred of us, with an unlimited amendment process", McConnell said.

While the Trump Administration Hydra grows a new venomous head almost every hour, a handful of Senate Republicans are quietly trying to push through an Obamacare replacement bill before the July 4th recess. "Thankfully, at the end of this process, the Senate will finally have a chance to turn the page on this failed law".
