Trump, Modi seek rapport despite friction on trade, immigration

President Donald Trump accompanied by first lady Melania Trump meets with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington Monday

In a separate statement, Jagdip Ahluwalia, executive director of Indo American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston, said the United States and India share a symbiotic relationship, and Modi's first meeting with Donald Trump is an important step in strengthening the relationship between the two nations. "Fight against terrorism and their safe havens is an important part of our cooperation", he said at the Rose Garden lawns.

Jaishankar also said there were discussions on issues in the Indian Ocean region, Middle-East in the context of security, and on Afghanistan, particularly the United States policy review on it. Both our nations have been struck by the evils of terrorism and we are both determined to destroy terrorist organisations and the radical ideology that drives them. Trump and Modi expressed confidence that India and United States will together provide strong leadership to address global challenges and build prosperity for their citizens in the coming years.

The meeting between the two leaders, said Jaishankar, was cordial, focused and open.

But Trump also played to his political base and the nationalist camp in the White House.

The US President also had effusive praise for Modi's performance as prime minister.

"It is important that barriers be removed to the export of U.S. goods into your markets and that we reduce our trade deficit with your country", he said.

The two leaders, who held a meeting at the White House on Monday, also "called on all nations to resolve territorial and maritime disputes peacefully and in accordance with global law", the statement said.

Trump and Modi also called on Pakistan to ensure that its territory is not used to launch terrorist attacks on other countries.

"In our conversation today, President Trump and I have discussed all dimensions of US-India relations", he said at the end of a visit which has seen the announcement of several defence deals.

When it comes to terrorism, Michael Kugelman, a South Asia expert at the Wilson Center, said the two leaders have a similar worldview - that "it needs to be destroyed wherever it rears its murderous head".

Trade, however, remains an irritant, and on Saturday, leading U.S. congressmen complained in a letter to Trump that high-level engagement had failed to eliminate major barriers to USA imports and investment and had not deterred India from imposing new ones.

Modi harked back to Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan to stress that his agenda for his country was little different than Trump's.

Trump declared he was "true friend" of India and said relations between the two largest democracies have never been better.

Modi said that India was committed to peace in Afghanistan and rebuilding that country was a top priority.

Jaishankar added that terrorism was identified as a key challenge in the Trump-Modi meeting.

He also said that he and Trump agreed to work closely on boosting maritime trade and cooperation. Later, in the Oval Office, Trump sent social media abuzz when his handshake with Abe lasted a full 19 seconds. The surprise of the joint appearance was an announcement that Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter, will attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit to be held in India soon.

"Preparing the ground for the meeting between the leaders".

He said that the way the first couple welcomed him, "shows their respect not for me but for 125 crore Indians". "I would like to congratulate him for this", he said.

Trump said he was pleased about an Indian airline's recent order of 100 new American planes and that the United States looked forward to exporting more energy, including major long-term contracts to purchase American natural gas.
