The taoiseach wants Northern Ireland to remain in the single market and a range of EU programmes

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Theresa May has told the Irish people she wants a full trade agreement with the European Union to try and keep the Irish border open.

Upon arriving at 10 Downing Street, Varadkar said he was reminded of a specific scene from a famous film.

Ireland's new premier Leo Varadkar said he wants to renew the close bond with the United Kingdom ahead of talks with Theresa May in Downing Street.

"This is my first time in this building, and there is a little thrill in it as well".

Mr Varadkar referenced the fact it was his first overseas trip as Taoiseach and thanked the prime minister for arranging to meet at such short notice.

"At the meeting I spoke again and offer condolences on behalf of the Irish people and the Irish Government to the British people and the British government on the enormous tragedies that this country and this city has faced", he said. "We are leaving the European Union, but we are not leaving Europe, and we want to remain committed partners and allies of Ireland and all our friends across the continent", said May.

He said the two prime ministers had spoken about the two governments' "special role" as co-guarantors of Northern Ireland's peace agreement.

"I was very assured by what the prime minister had to say that the agreement, once it's reached, will be published so it will be there for everyone to see", he said.

The Irish prime minister also wants "minimal or no disruption to trade between our two countries".

Sinn Féin has stressed that its participation in the Northern Ireland assembly depends on civil rights issues being dealt with when the executive resumes.

The DUP's deal to prop up the Tories at Westminster is also likely to be discussed at Downing Street.

Mrs May said today that the Government was "steadfast in our support for the Belfast Agreement", but the Blanch man said he did "relay concerns" about a possible deal.

"As we take another step forward in the tackling the great issues that face us today, that face Europe and Northern Ireland, and the British and Irish relationship", he said.
