Saudi Arabia said today a Turkish military base similar to that built in neighbouring Qatar would not be welcome in the kingdom, insisting it is "not needed".

But Qatari officials didn't budge from their previous insistence that they won't sit down with Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations to negotiate an end to the crisis while under siege.

The standoff has been awkward for the United States.

Mr Erdogan's ruling AK Party has its roots in Islamist politics and, like Qatar, supported Muslim Brotherhood groups during and after the Arab Spring.

At the end of his remarks, he said the Islamic world required unity and integrity and the two countries could undoubtedly work together in these arenas.

"They have the diplomatic clout and technical know-how", Gargash said.

Qatar's foreign minister has rejected a list of 13 conditions set by four Arab states for lifting sanctions, saying it is neither reasonable nor actionable, the BBC reported.

Muftuoglu said the establishment of the Turkish military base in Qatar was in line with the common vision of Turkey and the GCC for promoting regional peace, security and stability.

"Gulf unity can only be restored when all countries involved are willing to discuss terms that are measured and realistic", he said.

Riyadh, along with the UAE, Bahran and Egypt cut ties with Qatar over allegations that it funds terrorism.

Funding: Stop all Qatar funding of any kind to terrorist or extremist individuals, entities or organizations. The move has left Qatar under a de facto blockade by its neighbors.

Meanwhile, Turkey stepped up the Gulf crisis by announcing its decision to line up with Qatar.

Yet resisting the demands could prove hard. "It is a breach of Qatar's sovereignty rights".

The demands called for the creation of a 10-year mechanism to ensure Qatar is complying with the agreement. Qatar denies this, calling the ultimatum unreasonable. It added that the demands submitted by the four Arab countries were a violation of the worldwide law.

"This is an Arab issue that requires an Arab solution", Otaiba said.

Middle East Institute scholar Zubair Iqbal says there is a possibility for Qatar to meet some of the demands. "We are for them to settle between themselves all the problems".

In a statement, Al-Jazeera said the shutdown demand was "nothing but an attempt to silence the freedom of expression in the region and to suppress people's right to information and the right to be heard".

Underscoring the growing seriousness of the crisis, state-run Qatar Petroleum acknowledged Friday that some critically important employees "may have been asked to postpone" trips overseas "for operational reasons" due to the embargo. They do not specify what further action those countries might take if Qatar does not obey.

"Qatar has begun its careful review and consideration of a series of requests presented by Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE", Tillerson said in a statement issued in Washington.
