Driver dies after ramming auto with explosives into Paris convoy

20 June 2017, 10:08 | Terri Saunders

A man on the radar of French authorities for extremism was killed Monday after ramming a auto carrying arms and explosives into a police convoy on Paris' famed Champs-Elysees Avenue, setting off a fiery blast and a cloud of orange smoke, officials said. Weapons and explosives were found inside the vehicle.

French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb, meanwhile, told reporters there were enough explosives in the vehicle "to allow him to blow up this auto..."

Paris police said neither gendarmes nor passersby were injured.

No police officers or passers-by were hurt in the incident Monday afternoon, the Paris police department said.

In late April, before the first round of voting in France's presidential election, there was a similar incident on the Champs-Elysees, when a man opened fire on police parked on the street, killing one and wounding two. Brandet said the attacker appeared to have acted deliberately.

The alleged assailant chased down the leading vehicle of a police squadron in a small white car and, according to CNN, the car contained so many explosives that the car burst into flames shortly after the collision.

"This is being treated as a terrorist incident and is being investigated by the Counter Terrorism Command", said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu. "This shows once again that the terror threat level in France is high".

Death toll for London fire rises to 79, may change
What emerges in the coming weeks and months will be very hard for many people, including politicians and organisations, but we must get to the truth.

Police said that the driver of a Renault Megane passed out a convoy of gendarmerie vehicles before turning and crashing into the lead police van, at which point his auto caught fire.

Police did not fire a single shot at the scene, but officials confirmed that the driver, who had been flagged for extremism, was badly burned and died.

Additional police were deployed near mosques in London and other cities following the attack.

Police say the situation is now under control, and a bomb disposal unit is on the scene.

A nearby subway station in the area was shut down.

The gunman, Karim Cheurfi, was shot dead by police and a note praising the Islamic State group was found next to his body.
