She was riding the "Sky Ride" at Six Flags Great Escape in Queensbury, New York when she slipped out of the gondola chair. "Thank god she was there because maybe her neck would have got hurt".
Footage shows a crowd of people assembling beneath her, ready to catch her if she fell.
The girl dangling from the ride, and then falling into the arms of people standing below. She struck a tree branch on her way down, according to police.
"Hold on, don't let go!" others can be heard saying.
Matthew Howard Sr. was just leaving a NY amusement park Saturday evening with his family when he heard someone screaming for help.
The 47-year-old and his 21-year-old daughter, Leeann Winchell, positioned themselves beneath the girl as the ride was stopped and security staff came running to help.
"I said: 'It's 'OK!"
The girl lets go and is caught by the pair to cheers and applause.

The unidentified 14-year-old girl from Greenwood, Delaware, was taken to Albany Medical Center in stable condition with no serious injuries, the Warren County Sheriff's Office said.
Howard had some minor shoulder and rib pain, but said he and his daughter were able to visit the girl today. "No one wants to put himself underneath a body like that, but I couldn't stand by and watch".
When she did eventually fall the nearly eight metres to the ground, she landed almost completely on one man, Matthew Howard Sr, who was treated for a back injury in the aftermath.
As of now, we don't know why this girl was hanging so precariously from Sky Ride. "We were in the right place at the right time".
Howard is just happy he and his daughter were among those on the ground below.
On Sunday, park officials said the ride had been cleared for operation, but would remain closed.
Six Flags has not yet commented on the incident, and it is not known why the girl was in such a state of danger during a ride which park investigators describe as a full-functioning "gondola-style attraction". "The safety and security of our guests is our top priority and our thoughts and prayers are with our guest and her family".
