Bill Cosby case: Judge declares mistrial after jury deadlock
Bill Cosby's trial on sexual assault charges ended in a mistrial Saturday after jurors failed to reach a unanimous decision after six days of deliberations.
Cosby's wife of 53 years, Camille, slammed prosecutors for bringing the case to court, calling District Attorney Kevin Steele "heinously and exploitively ambitious" in a statement released after court adjourned.
But the jurors clearly struggled with their verdict, telling the judge on Day 4 they were at impasse. "We're not here because of Andrea Constand".
"She (has) shown such courage through this", he said.
Most prosecutors, faced with a mistrial caused by a hung jury, will initially insist publicly upon their dogged determination to retry the case, just as defendants will maintain that they will never agree to a plea bargain because of their strong faith in our jury system - essential postures to maintain the strongest possible bargaining position.
He later said that "for Mr. Cosby's sake, I just hope that they let him get back to work and be who he has always been: America's favorite dad".
Instead she put across a venomous attack on Steele's credibility, as well as that of Judge Steven O'Neill and the media.
"How do I describe the District Attorney?"
At the time, she was the operations manager for the women's basketball program at Temple University, where Cosby was the most famous alumnus and a member of the board of trustees, someone she viewed as a mentor and father-figure.
"We commend those prosecutors who raised awareness that one of the hallmarks of drug-related sexual assaults is the effect the drug has on the victim's memory and ability to recall and were nonetheless willing to present this evidence to the jury", she said in a statement that her attorneys released to USA media.

Constand described how, on a night at Cosby's home in 2004, she began to lose her mental capacities after ingesting three pills that Cosby had offered her.
Cosby's lawyers have argued that Constand was his lover before she fabricated the assault to try to get money from him.
NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) In one of the more unusual scenes to play out at Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial, the judge questioned Cosby under oath as jury deliberations wore on to be sure he knew the mistrial he sought could lead to a second trial.
Bill Cosby is thanking his fans and supporters as a jury considers sexual assault charges that could send him to prison for the rest of his life.
The controversy played a role in a federal judge's decision in 2015 to unseal parts of a deposition Cosby had given almost a decade earlier as part of a lawsuit Constand filed against him alleging sexual battery. "Everyone is assuming one way or another", said O'Neill. "Why are we running from the truth of this case - this relationship?" Overtly arrogant and collaborating with the District Attorney.
After a lunch break, jurors are expected to rehear testimony from accuser Andrea Constand and her mother about phone calls with Cosby.
"There are some things in this case that should be fuzzy. Why?" But TV networks had long since scrapped plans for a comeback and pulled reruns from the air after his lurid deposition testimony became public.
"One of the greatest storytellers in the world and I'm failing", Cosby said when asked to repeat an answer in the deposition.
The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, which Constand has done.
